I stanbul is in fact many cities rolled into one. Here is the district of Galata, once an Italian colony, with a mediaeval Genoese defence tower sticking out in its midst. It was a fashionable neighbourhood in the 19th century, inhabited by the resident Europeans and the Jews of the imperial capital. It went down with the empire, to come back again 80 years later when the winds of fashion began to turn once again. The restorers went to work to unearth glimpses of vanished glory - a bit of palatial plaster here, an ebony goddess there, cast-iron railings by the finest Parisian suppliers elsewhere - hidden under layers of slum grime.
Anemon Hotel, opened in 2002, occupies a beautiful old apartment building in Galata Square, right across from the Tower. It is operated by a nationwide hotel chain, which brings professional expertise to the job, at the expense, perhaps, of a more personal "soul". The lobby glitters impressively. The rooms promise streamlined "old-world" luxury. The view from the glass-enclosed roof café must be among the worlds most striking cityscapes.
