T hese days it is not enough for a city-centre hotel to be charming or romantic. Instead it must also be hip, which, in the case of the new Lush Hotel in the trendy Taksim area, translates into bunk beds for adults (in one room) and a rainforest of greenery in the basement café. No matter what your taste, Lush has it covered. English chintz, leather upholstery, Texan cowhide - it's all here, as is a stylish Ottoman suite which hosts Tuesday night theatricals. The café doubles as a breakfast room against a backdrop of suitably contemporary music. It's all super-smart, if somewhat impersonal for our tastes.

The shell of the building is more prosaic, a sturdy 19th-century apartment block built in the days before Sıraselviler began to rival nearby İstiklal Avenue in the İstanbul nightlife stakes. Nowadays you can hardly cross the road for the traffic, both vehicular and human, but once you've managed that feat you'll be spoilt for choice of restaurants, cafes and nightclubs.

Should the effort of staying hip ever grow wearisome, then round the corner stands the magnificent Greek church of the Agia Triada.
