S ultanahmet Square is where tourists meet the sultans; Istiklal Avenue is the throbbing heart of an altogether different sort of Istanbul: young, brash, lively, cosmopolitan, and immersed in Today as if there was never a Yesterday. Till yesterday, this Istanbul was just a side-show for most visitors to the city. Increasingly, it has turned into the main attraction of this extraordinary city.

Joost Rooijmans' Misafir Suites are located just a block off the busiest part of Istiklal, and yet they enjoy the (relative) peace and quiet of a pedestrianised street with only three or four cafés per block (as opposed to the more usual ten or twenty). Joost, a tall and mild-mannered Dutchman, has converted a lovely late-Ottoman building into a comfortably elegant set of just 6 self-catering apartments. The units are huge, with soaring ceilings and spacious bathrooms; they are decorated with understated gusto, with many intelligent details that warm a visitor's heart.

Joost and his Turkish wife had the foresight to snap up the apartment block years ago, in the days when Beyoglu was still struggling to shake off mid-century decline. They could have squeezed twice as many rooms into the capacious building but instead opted to keep its generous proportions intact. Now they serve as a backdrop for luscious fabrics and furnishings accumulated on their travels.
